Revolutionizing Dining: Jeffrey Zee's Hik 9 Restaurant

Award-winning design transforms a parking garage into an intimate, multi-functional dining space

The inspiration for Hik 9 came from the original building itself, which was a bicycle parking garage. The space was cleverly divided into two parts: a parking deck that now serves as a dining area and starting kitchen, and ramps that have been redesigned as wine cellars. This innovative design approach has resulted in a unique dining space that is both intimate and functional.

What sets Hik 9 apart from other restaurants is its focus on creating a private space for guests to enjoy food and communicate with family and friends. The dry-aged room, open storage area, and professional wine cellar allow guests to visually appreciate and select ingredients, while the open kitchen allows them to enjoy the display of different cooking techniques, creating an atmosphere of health and trust.

The materials used in the design also contribute to the warm and natural atmosphere of the restaurant. Bronze and black walnut were chosen to match the floodlit lighting, while the fair-faced concrete wall highlights the architectural essence. White oak is used in the wine cellar to create a professional wine cabinet for storing high-end wine.

The project, which covers a total of 160 square meters, began in Shanghai in October 2020 and was completed in December 2020. Despite the challenges of transforming the original building and overcoming space limitations, the design team was able to create a multi-functional dining space where people's feelings and the space style are fully expressed.
